No Sun, No Problem: The Basement Growers Feeding Themselves Off the Grid
Somewhere beneath a row of Brooklyn brownstones, in a space that used to store holiday decorations and broken furniture, Marcus Delray is harvesting oyster mushrooms from a stack of inoculated straw logs at two in the morning. There's no window. There's barely a light — just a soft purple glow from a timer-controlled LED strip and the hum of a small humidifier he picked up secondhand on Facebook Marketplace. He's wearing a headlamp and a hoodie that says Compost Everything.
"People think growing food requires, like, a farm," he says, twisting a cluster of pale gray caps free from their substrate. "But plants and fungi don't owe anything to that story. Neither do I."
Marcus is part of a quietly expanding underground — literally — movement of urban growers who've decided that the industrial food system isn't just broken, it's optional. They're building hydroponic setups in studio apartments, running mushroom grows in unfinished basements, and converting abandoned commercial spaces into productive food ecosystems that operate entirely without natural light. And the darkness, they'll tell you, isn't a limitation. It's the whole point.
The Grow Room as Protest Space
Hydroponics and mycological cultivation aren't new concepts. Commercial operations have used controlled-environment agriculture for decades. But what's different about this wave is the ethos driving it — and how deliberately low-budget and decentralized it all is.
For many of these growers, the choice to go underground is explicitly political. Industrial agriculture in the United States is responsible for roughly 10% of the country's greenhouse gas emissions, relies heavily on chemical inputs that degrade soil over generations, and is increasingly consolidated in the hands of a shrinking number of massive corporations. Meanwhile, food deserts persist across American cities, particularly in Black and brown communities, where access to fresh produce is a structural problem, not a personal failing.
Building a grow room in your basement, in this context, isn't just a hobby. It's a rejection.
"I grew up in a neighborhood where the closest grocery store was forty minutes away by bus," says Tierra Okonkwo, a 26-year-old in Detroit who runs a small hydroponic lettuce and herb operation out of her basement and shares the harvest with neighbors. "When I started growing my own food, I wasn't thinking about Instagram. I was thinking about how nobody was going to fix this for us."
Tierra taught herself to build a nutrient film technique (NFT) hydroponic system from YouTube tutorials and a $200 materials budget. She now produces enough leafy greens each month to supplement her household and regularly drops off extras at a nearby community fridge. The whole operation runs on a repurposed shelving unit, a small water pump, and grow lights she sourced from a closing cannabis supply shop.
What They're Actually Growing
The range of what's happening in these underground setups is wider than you might expect.
Mushroom cultivation is probably the most accessible entry point — oyster mushrooms in particular can be grown on agricultural byproducts like coffee grounds or straw, require no light to fruit, and have a turnaround time of just a few weeks. Lion's mane, shiitake, and king oyster varieties are popular too, and the community around cultivation has exploded on Reddit, Discord, and niche YouTube channels where growers share substrate recipes and contamination troubleshooting with the same energy as open-source software developers.
Hydroponic setups range from simple Kratky method jars — a passive, no-pump technique that's genuinely beginner-friendly — to more complex deep water culture systems capable of producing tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and strawberries year-round. Some growers are experimenting with aquaponics, combining fish tanks with plant beds in closed-loop systems that produce both protein and produce simultaneously.
And then there are the microgreens people, who've turned a few square feet of shelf space into surprisingly productive operations. Sunflower shoots, pea tendrils, radish, broccoli — dense with nutrients and ready to harvest in under two weeks.
"Microgreens are kind of the gateway drug," laughs Priya Nair, a nurse in Chicago who started growing them during the pandemic and now maintains a 200-square-foot basement setup that she's turned into a small side income, selling to local restaurants. "Once you realize you can grow food faster than you can go to the store, something shifts in your brain."
Teaching Yourself the Science
One of the most striking things about this community is how seriously its members take the technical side of things — and how little formal education most of them have in agriculture or biology.
They're learning plant physiology, nutrient chemistry, mycology, and systems design through a combination of academic papers accessed via Sci-Hub, community forums, and old-fashioned trial and error. They're tracking pH levels and electrical conductivity in their nutrient solutions. They're learning about vapor pressure deficit and its effect on mushroom pinning. They're building their own automated monitoring systems using cheap microcontrollers and open-source code.
"I have a background in graphic design," says Marcus. "I had never grown anything in my life. But the information is out there if you want it. And the community is incredibly generous with knowledge."
This self-taught, peer-to-peer learning culture mirrors broader DIY and maker movements — but with a specific urgency tied to food sovereignty. Knowledge, in this context, is infrastructure.
Darkness as a Feature
There's something almost philosophical about the way these growers talk about working in the dark. The absence of sunlight, which might seem like the most fundamental obstacle to growing food, becomes reframed as freedom from dependency.
You're not at the mercy of the season. You're not waiting on the weather. You're not tied to a particular geography or climate zone. You're operating on your own timeline, in your own controlled environment, producing food that doesn't require a supply chain stretching across continents.
"I think there's something really powerful about the idea that you can create abundance in a space that looks like nothing from the outside," says Tierra. "A dark basement in Detroit doesn't look like a food source. But it is. That messes with people's assumptions about where resources come from and who gets to have them."
The metaphor isn't lost on a generation that's grown up watching institutions fail, watching the climate crisis accelerate, and watching food prices climb while wages stagnate. Growing something edible in the dark feels, to a lot of these people, like an act of stubborn optimism — a refusal to wait for systems to fix themselves.
Where This Is Going
This movement is still scattered and informal, but there are signs it's gaining structural momentum. Community grow collectives are starting to emerge in cities like Philadelphia, Oakland, and Minneapolis. Some are connecting with mutual aid networks to direct their harvests toward food-insecure neighbors. Others are running workshops — often sliding-scale or free — to help people build their own setups.
The technology is also getting cheaper and more accessible. LED grow lights have dropped dramatically in price over the past five years. Sensors, pumps, and timers are available at hardware stores and online for next to nothing. The barrier to entry is genuinely lower than it's ever been.
None of this is going to replace industrial agriculture tomorrow. But that's not really the point. The point is that more people are learning that they can grow food — that this knowledge belongs to them, not to a corporation or an expert class or a government program. That in a dark basement with a secondhand pump and a bag of perlite, something real and nourishing can come to life.
Marcus pulls another cluster of mushrooms free, drops them into a colander, and grins at them under his headlamp.
"People think I'm down here because I have to be," he says. "But honestly? I'm down here because this is where the good stuff grows."
